Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve
Founded in 1963, Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve has come to be the first national park of Costa
Rica that preserves nature and wildlife. It is situated on the southern Pacific Coast of Nicoya
Peninsula, in the province of Puntarenas, about 10 kilometers southeast of Montezuma. It covers a huge
area of 12.7 Kilometers square on the terrestrial land while on the waters, about 17.9 Kilometers square
of area comes under the park The park is at the same site where San Miguel Biological Station
was established to reinforce teaching, research and environmental studies. There were libraries,
laboratories, classrooms and other facilities. A campaign was started in the country for an
environmental reserve park and hence, in 1963, Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve was created. The
Northwestern Pacific side of Costa Rica is one of the driest parts. The weather is consistent all year
round, but the months between December and April offer the best conditions to visit. The park is famous
for its variegated fauna and flora.
Fauna
The park is well-known for The White Cape, which is a large clump of rocks present at the southern peak
of the park which is inhabited by a multifarious species of bird. Among the verdurous landscapes, you
will be able to see white throat magpie jays, parrots, ringed kingfisher, toucans, Sulpher-winged
parakeets, cattle egrets, kingfishers, green herons, trogons, long-tailed manakins, scarlet macaws,
crested caracara, white bellied chachalaca, and turquoise-browed motmots. By the shore waters, plenty of
mollusks, crabs, nautical fishes and marine birds can be seen. The park has most abundant colonies of
pelicans, conch and brown boobies. Furthermore, quite a large numbers of mammals have chosen to dwell in
Cabo Blanco such as howler monkeys, white-face monkeys, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, spiky
porcupines, white-nosed coatis, white-tailed deer, collared peccary, ocelots, jaguarundis, wild cougars,
gray fox, anteaters, hog nosed skunks, raccoon, coyotes, pacas, armadillos and margays.
Flora
For naturists, Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve is an idyllic landmark. The sultry jungles of the park are a
crossover between wet and dry tropical forests and thus flourish with exotic combination of evergreen
and deciduous plants. There are about 140 different species of trees like for example, wild plums,
trumpet trees, lance wood, sapoditta, Pochote, Guacimo, the tall Espavel Tree, gumbo-limbo, trumpet
tree, dogwood, frangipani and
spiny cedar and the dazzling yellow
colored Cortez Amarillo .
Things To Do
Tourists from all across the globe come to Cabo
Blanco Park for hiking, swimming, surfing and bird watching. There are two beaches in the park, Playa
Cabo Blanco and Playa Balsitas, which are absolutely ideal for watching the pelicans.
Park Admission Fees and Hours
The park is open from Wednesday to Sunday. Timings are 8 AM to 4 PM. Admission fees are 10
dollars per person.
What to Bring
Tourists are advised to bring with themselves a bathing suit, towels, shorts, extra shirts, sun-blocks,
bug-repellent, rain-gears and most importantly, comfortable shoes. Have an awesome time among the vast
scenery of tropical lands.
