Getting Around Santa Teresa and Mal Pais

Getting Around Santa Teresa and Mal Pais

In Mal Pais and Santa Teresa, there are several choices for moving between places. Travelers have options
like rental cars, private vans, minivans, boats, ferries, shuttles, public bus, and even horses!
Depending on a route, budget, and length of stay, travelers can either choose one of them or their
combination.

Rental Cars

Rentals cars are often preferred by the tourists as they offer full privacy and freedom over the course
of traveling. There are quite a few numbers of services of rental cars in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa
regions of Costa Rica. However, some of them can trick you into paying more than necessary. Budget, Bego
and Terios are the recommended companies for rental cars. They will cost no more than a shuttle service
and provides better control over your plans. These companies are allotted with all sorts of
cars suiting the budget of travelers. Furthermore, the owners of cars are residents of Costa
Rica and they know their way around. Several roads of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa are rough and of dirt,
and the rental agencies’ owners are the best judges to let the renters know what kind of car will best
suit the roads and their needs. There are agencies by the airport and other local areas. They
become a big help if a car broke down on the way and allows you to swap them, thus preventing you from
hassle. Now coming on to the rates, the lowest price you can pay for a car is 70 to 90 dollars per day
depending on the season. The prices are high due to the rough roads which often cause the travelers to
damage them. In wet seasons, a 4WD is recommended while in dry ones, a 2WD is convenient. The
car is ideal for visitors living in the houses on the hills. If they are residing in other parts of the
town, they may not need the car. Moreover, there are numerous enticing places in Santa Teresa and Mal
Pais like waterfalls, beaches, nature reserves parks, bars and restaurants, so having a car also mean
you can head over anywhere anytime. Also, it is safe to drive in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa.

Public Buses

There is a daily public bus service to Mal Pais from San Jose. One advantage of buses is that the tickets
are cheap. They cost about 7 US dollars per person. Another benefit is that the buses cover most of the
places in the towns. However, all the buses take their routes from San Jose, and
this quality is often found to be inconvenient by the tourists as it adds considerable
time to their travel. Also, on busy days, one may have a hard time finding an empty seat.

Private Taxi

A private taxi can be hired to take you around the town. It will cost around 200 US dollars.

 Shuttles/Mini-buses

Shuttle comes to the rescue for those cannot    or do not want to drive. It is
an allocated, air-conditioned mini-bus or a coaster that differ from public buses as the seats are
reserved in advance. Shuttle service costs 45 to 50 US dollars.

The word ‘vos’ (you or vos sos that means you are) and tu
(also means you) are informal words used among the citizens of Costa Rica, Uruguay,  Argentina
and many other Latin American countries. When being formal, the ticas make use of the word ‘Regalo mi’
which translate into ‘gift me’ instead of more informal, get me.

Along with Costa Rican Spanish, in several areas, especially in Puerto Limon, a province
of  Costa Rica on Caribbean sea side, a different English-based creole language. It is known
as Limónese Creole (it is also called as Limón Creole English and Mekatelyu).  It has many
versions such as Colón Creole, Mískito Coastal Creole, Belizean Kriol language, and San Andrés and
Providencia Creole.

Following are the essential expressions that will help you get around the towns:

Yes: Si

No: No

Surf Spots in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa

Surf Spots in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa

Mal Pais and Santa Teresa’s real attraction is their consistent waves. The remote tropical towns are
located on the southern tip of Pacific Coast of Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. Free from the city jazz
and opulent fuss, the towns give people an appealing change of scene on their holidays.
Imagine yourself in a land exquisitely defined with long stretches of white sand
beaches, infinite lagoon of blue, forested crags, rain-forests flourishing with wildlife and
an appeasing, isolated atmosphere. There are several beaches dotting the areas in and around Mal Pais
and Santa Teresa, and most of them are popular for their surf breaks. The excellent surfs are one of the
main reasons of the recent popularity among the surfers. Several international competitions between
surfers are now held at Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. Not only that, those who are novices in surfing, they
can easily learn to surf on their vacation.

Surf Spots in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa

Mal Pais is an incredible place to surf. With a few persons in sight, you do not have to wait up in lines
like in Jaco beach. Papagayo strong winds and waves of Central Pacific and Guanacaste hit the shores of
Mal Pais, and this allows a perfect blend of strong rip currents all year round. Surfing in Santa Teresa
is better during the low-currents when the waves are faster. The high swells and a range of surf breaks
attract a lot of experienced surfers. La Lora and Suck Rock are popular spots for surfing in
Santa Teresa.

Punta Barrigona

It is an exposed left hand point break on Nicoya Peninsula. Offshore winds from the northeast, frequent
groundswells and southern windswells along with strong rips offer quite a challenge to surfers. It is
not suitable for beginners.

Sunset Reef

It is also a left hand point that may not have very consistent breaks, however the challenge to
brave the waves entice the professional surfers all the time.

Playa Carmen

Playa Carmen is a long strip of white-sand beach positioned between the towns of Mal Pais and Santa
Teresa.  The beach is known for its perfect surfing spots all year round. The waves tend to be less
forceful with rip tides. Dry season offers the best conditions to surf; these are the months between
December and April. Due to its rip currents, Playa Carmen is also suitable for beginner surfers.

Mar Azul

The rock formations and overhead swells create a good combination for surfing which is only suitable for
pro surfers. It has both right and left hand point breaks.

Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa has got surf breaks all year round. The waves are rip currents and less forceful
which makes it convenient for novices in surfing. The northern end of the beach
is acknowledged to have the best of surfing spots.

Manzanillo

It needs a good swell to develop for surfing. The beach is well known for its snorkeling spots.

Playa de Los Suecos

The left hand break is long, hollow offshore and requires a workable wall. Not suitable for beginners.

List of accommodations that offer surfing class: Mal Pais Surf Camp & Resort,
Hotel Surf the Place, Anamaya Surf and Yoga Retreat, and Blue Surf Sanctuary.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa

Malpais and Santa Teresa are tropical towns of Costa Rica, located on Southern Pacific Coast of Nicoya
Peninsula. The beautiful white-sand beaches are famous for their versatile aquatic sports opportunities,
tropical forests and its desirable isolation. The gulf of Nicoya Peninsula overhangs into the Pacific
Ocean and quite a number of nautical fishes are seen on the surface waters. Costa Rica is on eastern
side of Central Pacific ocean, this area has been known to enjoy a biologically variegated marine life.
Several factors have influenced the diversity of marine creatures such as the country being close to the
equator has several micro-climates and the water nutrients are varied. Compared to the Caribbean side,
the pacific waters contain far more varieties of sea-creatures and a few reefs and
corals.  The ocean on the western side has low temperature and is populated by a large range
of plankton blooms. They make a good snack for fishes and mollusks. Although, reef and corals are few,
but each of them has been inhabited by an immense biosphere. The food chain begins from small
blennioideis, eels, angle-fish, wrasse, puffers to menacing reef sharks.

The ocean on the Mal Pais and Santa Teresa side is packed with plenty of seafaring fish. The beaches,
especially the bay of Manzanillo, are a perfect spot for scuba diving and snorkeling. The beach is
blessed with an appealing seclusion, charged with calming breezes, surging waves and swaying Palm Trees
and Almendro Trees. The high and mid tides are convenient for a swim but there are several underwater
rocks so one should be careful when bathing in the ocean. A ledge of these rocks forms a bounded cove
which is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. The sun light is good in these points and one can
admire the creatures like white tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, manta rays, eagle rays, tuna fish, jacks
dolphins and barracudas close by.  There are about 650 species of mystical sea-creatures. If
you are snorkeling in October or December, you will catch a school of hump-back whales and pilot whales
floating their way to Antarctic from the Pacific waters of Mal Pais. It is said that many towns in Costa
Rica has spots where the endangered Leather-back turtles and Olive Ridley sea-turtle breed.

The oceanic water of Mal Pais right adjacent to the Cabo
Blanco Nature Reserve Park is still pure and for snorkelers and divers, there is pleasant surprise.
Please note that the morning hours offer the best conditions as the waters are well-lighted.
Furthermore, the dry season is better than wet season, as the rain-fall reduces the visibility up to 100
feet.

There are various local shops nearby the beach that rent snorkeling and scuba diving gear. You can also
take lessons from a professional instructor. Another great spot for snorkeling and scuba diving is
Tortuga Island.  There are many local services and hotels that will arrange a boat trip for
guests to the island. The waters are loaded with merry dolphins, manta-rays and quite a few numbers of
humpback whales.

Weather of Santa Teresa and Mal Pais

Weather of Santa Teresa and Mal Pais

Costa Rica is a tropical country situated between eight to twelve degrees to the North
Latitude. The country is close to the equator, and the climate remains tropical all year round. However,
there are several micro-climates that appear due to different factors such as rainfall, topography,
elevations and geography. There are two main types of seasons that alter. Dry Season, or as locals
like to call it ‘Verano’, brings summer while the Wet Season or ‘Invierno’, means winters. Although,
summer is called a dry season, it only means that it rains comparably less than in the winter. The
winters and its thunderstorms coincide with the Atlantic Hurricane season. The conventional
seasonal changes common to most of the world do not fit to Costa Rica. Where December means a
chillingly cold weather in several countries, December in Costa Rica means warm days filled with
sunshine and warmth. Summer time lasts from December to April while May to November in Costa Rica means
Invierno. During the turning points, short transitions to spring and autumn occur. The micro-climatic
seasons depend on how much rain fall has occurred on a certain period. Humidity is yet another
factor. It is high in the Caribbean side as compared to that on the Pacific side. On the
coastal lowlands, the temperature is 27 degrees and atop the highest mounts, it is around 10 degrees.

So, for tourists who ask “When is the best time to Costa Rica?” The answer largely
depends on the purpose of the visit. Travelers, whose main pursuits are leisure, hitting the
beaches and having a real taste of a tropical clime, the time between December to April will be the
best. The High Season, or summer, usually attracts an influx of travelers. The coasts of Nicoya
Peninsula are sun-kissed this time of the year, and the resorts, hotels and rental villas are all open
for rent. Visitors who are into traversing the Arenal Volcano, September and October offer the
best climatic conditions. While those tempted by Monteverde, months of January and May are ideal.
Bird-watchers will be amazed by the numbers of colorful birds flying about all year round. November and
April offer the best time to view the exquisite quetzals

 For watching
the flocks of birds in a process of migration, spring time that lasts from March to May and autumn that
lasts from September to November are perfect! When it comes to fishing on the Pacific coast,
November and May provides impeccable chances to hook a few fishes.

Mal Pais and Santa Teresa are two beach towns located on the southern Pacific coast of Nicoya Peninsula.
Remote yet brimming with vibrant colors of rain-forests, volcanic rocks and oceanic waves, the towns
have lately become a hotspot for vacationers. Summer brings the best out of these towns. Surf breaks are
consistent, wildlife is teeming and the sun rays pierce the white sands of the beaches.
The period between December and April is idyllic to visit when one wants to have a dose of pristine
tropical nature.

walk to the stores and less than a mile away from center part of Santa Teresa. This location
is appealing as it keep the guests nearby the amazing spots and still maintains high levels of
privacy. Raratonga Hotel is composed of two portions acting as different properties. One portion has
both rooms and apartments while the other, ‘Raratonga Apartments’ was recently designed in 2010 and
it features wooden apartments. The former building works perfectly for couples and a group of
three to four people. All the accommodations have air-conditioners, ceiling fans, room safes and
private bathrooms with hot water. The windows and verandas afford views to the lush gardens outside. The
four rooms are equipped with a queen size and bed and a single bed while the two apartments have a queen
size bed and two single beds. The apartments have a private kitchen and a patio. Raratonga Apartments is
a separate property which has access to a vast swimming pool. These apartments have similar
amenities to other building ones however they are larger and can host up to six people. Facilities of
the hotel include laundry service, free parking, access to the gardens and swimming pool. Amenities like
free wireless internet service throughout the hotel, coffee makers, minibars and telephone service
are really appreciated by the guests. The beach is a few steps away and visitors have the
perks of heading over there whenever they want.

Go wind-surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, fishing or swimming,
the adventurous activities are a must-do on your visit to Santa Teresa. Evening time brings a
spectacular show of a Costa Rican sunset that should not be missed! Live a Pura Vida in Raratonga Hotel
