Description:

Mal Pais is a land of tropical gardens, colorful rain forests, an immense ocean with surging waves,
clusters of fine sun kissed beaches and a diverse wildlife. The sounds of rolling waves rushing towards
the shores along with twittering of the birds and chorus of the night creatures create an aura of utter
appeasing calm. Ritmo Tropical Hotel is located at a few minutes’ walk from Playa Carmen which is
considered as one of the best surfing beaches of Santa Teresa and Mal Pais regions. The Ritmo Tropical
Hotel is set up in a distinctive air of poised tranquility and complacency. One great thing about the
hotel is that it does not stretch on the budget and suits the majority of people. Savor the best of the
Costa Rican moments at Ritmo Tropical Hotel this summer break.

Ritmo Tropical Hotel grasps a true Costa Rican medium with its skillfully
fashioned architecture. The seven bungalows have a quaint artistic outlook. The charming bungalows with
their red colored tiles scattered over the roofs, high ceilings made of wood, large washrooms, plenty of
windows and fronted airy terraces with views seem as if they have come straight out of a classical
story. Rimmed by luscious gardens blooming with exotic flora, the bungalows encircle the hotel’s massive
pool with an array of sumptuous landscapes of the seas and jungles. Besides the bungalows, the hotel has
a number of stylish back rooms with lower rates. Each bungalow has a private bathroom with a hot water
shower, ceiling fans, a satellite television set, a safety box and a fast speed wireless internet
connection. The vacationers are provided with a secure parking area and a night guard to ensure a safe
good night’s sleep. At your own choice, rent a double or a single bed at reasonable rates. The bungalows
can sleep up to five people. The swimming pool of Ritmo Tropical Hotel is centrally located surrounded
by the dwellings. The ambient sun-porch has deck chairs and colorful beach umbrellas where you can relax
to the level of your satisfaction.

Under the tropical sun, relish a glass of exotic cocktails or fruity milkshakes. There is a poolside
rancho that delivers yoga classes. The guests can also request a massage therapy. Feel new and fresh
after a dose of sunlight, oceanic breeze, meditation and holistic body massages.

The restaurant of Ritmo Tropical Hotel is the best when it comes to appetizing
dishes and alcohol. It opens for breakfast from 8 AM to 12 PM. The menu reads a large range of healthy
meals that will keep you going for the whole day. The hotel serves dinner from 5:30 PM and is famous for
its extensive variety of international food and traditional Costa Rican dishes like shrimps, a large
number of sea food, pasta with a huge selection of spices and sauces. The food is mouthwatering and
scrumptious that even after a full meal you will ravish your taste buds for more. The Pizzeria of the
hotel is yet another treat. They have been known to serve the most delicious Italian style pizza in the
town of Mal Pais. Spend one summer at Ritmo Tropical Hotel, Mal Pais and unwind yourselves with utmost
luxury and numerous exhilarating activities.

Surf Camps..

Surf Camps

Zopilote surf camp in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Surf Camps and Surf Retreats in the Malpais, Montezuma, and Santa Teresa areas.

A typical surf camp or surf retreat caters to beginners who want to learn surfing with professional
instructors in a group setting. Typical costs range from $600-$2000 for a week, depending on how fancy
the accommodations, and what’s included. A bare bones surf camp will put you in shared accommodations
with now AC and no food included. Higher-end surf retreats will have luxury accommodations and gourmet
health food.

For women, many surf retreats now include yoga as well, which is an ideal complement to surfing when it
comes to keeping in good physical shape. The stretching and breathing involved in yoga is great for
helping sore muscles after strenuous day of surfing, and yoga is also great for a warm-up.

Many thousands of people now travel to Costa Rica for surf retreats, after finding that they have more
fun than traditional travel. Even couples are joining surf camps and retreats for the same reason… you
will probably find you’ll have more fun with a group, spend more time laughing and playing, and make new
friends. Surf camps aren’t just for teenagers these days… people of all ages into their fifties are
trying this great travel concept.

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is a very long white sand beach with many different sections, and many beach accesses, each
with its own hotels and rental villas nearby. Each has its own characteristics based on the tide and
swell, but you’ll be able to find great surfing at any of them.

Santa Teresa Awards:

Santa Teresa was voted to be the #10 best beach in the world on Trip Advisor: Top Ten Best Beaches in the World

Trip Advisor also awarded Santa Teresa to be the #1 best beach destination in all of Central and South
America: Travelers Choice Award

Forbes Magazine voted “Malpais” (actually meaning Santa Teresa) as one of the top ten most breathtaking
beaches in the world: Forbes Best Beaches List

Places to stay in Santa Teresa:

There are so many, but there are a few that stand out:

Casa Capitan: The most impressive luxury beachfront rental villa in the
area.

Esencia Hotel Villas: Affordable option that’s a quick walk to a
great surfing beach at La Lora.

Florblanca Resort: Very expensive but loved by
honeymooners.

    Playa Hermosa

    Playa Hermosa

The most beautiful beach in Costa Rica

There are many Playa Hermosas in Costa Rica, which means “beautiful beach”. OUR Playa Hermosa is the next
    beach north of Santa
    Teresa
. It’s not nearly as developed, and the people who stay or travel there like it that way.

It’s incredibly beautiful, and NEVER crowded with surfers, even on the busiest days. Parking is very
limited, and difficult to maneuver your vehicle between the leaning palms, driftwood, and mangroves, and
most people who drive to this beach frequently have at least one dent in their car to prove their
    devotion to Playa Hermosa.

The surf here has two main options. There’s a wide beach break on a very flat beach, and to the north
there’s a point break. The beach break has good waves for a few hundred meters, and of course there are
a few spots that experienced surfers will notice that are better than others.

The right-hand point break works well at low and medium tides, and smaller waves tend to die out as they
pass through the channel, then pick up again. There are some rocks out there in the water where you tend
to want to catch the waves, but they’re fairly obvious and easily to avoid, especially in dry season
when the water tends to be clearer. Most of the surfers who live in the area and spend hours every day
at Playa Hermosa don’t ride the point but are instead parked at the best peaks in the center.
So if you’re a long-boarder, you will probably find just one or two people on the point at any given
    time.

Places to stay at Playa Hermosa:

The White House: An architectural jewel,
this very popular beachfront rental villa is beautifully designed and decorated.

Pranamar: The best hotel in the area, which is also
a center for yoga retreats. This hotel was built by the previous owners of the famous and over-priced Florblanca Resort in Santa Teresa, and is
both much nicer and a lot more affordable.

    Shaka Costa Rica is
the closest surf camp to Playa Hermosa, and has become very popular. The owners are great people and the
place has great energy, so check it out.

    Suck Rock

The famous Suck Rock point break is part of beautiful set of Santa Teresa beaches, next to the La Lora
    beach break.

Suck Rock is a right-hand break, and can get quite large. The swell needs to be overhead to create a good
ride-able wave. There are rumors of people surfing 20-ft waves from time to time. Surf photographers
often hang out on the beach in front of Suck Rock and take photos or make videos for surfers, for a
    price of course.

    Playa Carmen

    Playa Carmen

Playa Carmen, Costa Rica - the Southern Nicoya Peninsula

Playa Carmen is in the middle of everything, as you first come down the hill to the
Costa Rica beach area of Santa Teresa / Malpais, and is the most popular surf spot in the
Malpais / Santa Teresa area for two reasons. First of all, there are
the largest number of hotels and businesses, so the population density is higher. It also has a
beachfront pizza place and bar, which is one of the very few places that you can eat and stare at the
waves in the area, since the first 50 meters of beachfront is supposed to be undeveloped wildlife
corridor. And of course it doesn’t hurt that it has the most consistently great waves in the area.

Playa Carmen is the name of a beach, and there’s no official town here, although it is the commercial hub
of the area, with two banks, the pharmacy, the best bakery, sushi restaurant, half a dozen surf shops,
and many other places of interest to shop. One of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, it starts near Malpais Surf Camp and stretches north. There are
several rocky spots within the water, with nice-looking waves that look very inviting to surfers, such
as in front of Casa Zen and Super Vistas Bungalows. So it’s a good idea to use some
caution to find out where the safe places to surf are.

    Best Places to Stay:

The Palm Villa: One of the most beautiful
beachfront rental homes in the area

La Casona: Next to the Palm Villa,
you can rent them both for larger groups or families up to 16 people.

    Hotel Casa Azul:
Probably the best value for a beachfront place in the area, it’s the one that I recommend most. It’s
    often booked up however.

Casa Zen: Casa Zen is the coolest place
around, with yoga, a great restaurant, and a great owner and staff.

    Sunset Reef

    Sunset Reef

Sunset Reef Surf Spot in Malpais / Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Sunset Reef occasionally has its days where it becomes one of the best surf spots in the Malpais / Santa
Teresa area, but it’s isn’t very popular because it’s so inconsistent, and it’s at the end of the road
in Malpais. Most tourists don’t have rental cars, so they tend to surf right in front of their hotels.
Or, with limited time available, they’ll travel to the beach breaks such as Playa Carmen and La Lora
where they’re guaranteed to have consistent and surfable waves regardless of tides, swell size, and
    direction.

For these reasons, you’ll rarely find anyone surfing here, and it remains rather mysterious. If you’re
reading this, you’re probably a tourist and it’s really not worth your time to try to find this spot. If
you’re really itching to surf it, you should make friends with one of the local surfers and maybe
they’ll take you out on the rare right day.

    History of Sunset Reef

Years ago, someone built a hotel here in this epic spot, but they made the mistake of ignoring federal
law, and built it partially in the public zone (which is 50 meters from the average high tide line.)
They ran the hotel successfully until a few years ago, when the municipality finally shut it down. Now,
it sits abandoned in the foreground of the Sunset Reef surf spot, abandoned and rotting, and would be a
great location for a Hollywood movie.

    How to find Sunset Reef

It’s very easy to find Sunset Reef. Just drive south from Santa Teresa or Malpais along the beach road
until you see the fishermen’s boats. Park near there and walk past them, and you’ll see a path, perhaps
with a chain across it, and a sign for the old Sunset Reef hotel. Just walk down that path until you’re
on the rocky point. The break is directly in front. To reach it, continue to the left until you find the
rivermouth, and with it a channel that will suck you out to the break, which is a left-hander.

    My Favorite Malpais Breaks

    My Favorite Malpais Breaks

Surfing the Mar Azul point break in Malpais, Costa Rica

This is a first in a series of articles by George about surfing Costa Rica.

    #1 – Mar Azul

I have been surfing for 40 years in various parts of the world. This column will focus on my surfing
experiences in Costa Rica. I have been surfing in this beautiful country for 15 years and it is one of
my favorite places not only for the surf but for the natural beauty, the people, the fishing and many
    other outdoor activities.

I will start with the break called “Mar Azul” which just so happens to be located right out my front
door. Mar Azul is a left hand point break that breaks best on a large south swell. It has several peaks
starting with the large first peak that begins right in front of a very large reef rock. It can be a
sketchy drop for a beginner and is only recommended for advances surfers depending on the size. The
inside second peak is much more user friendly and when working correctly can break for over 200 yards.
The paddle out is usually easy because you can begin paddling at the mouth of the bay into which the
waves break without getting your hair wet. Mar Azul does not break often, but when it gets big enough it
can be one of the most fun waves in Mal Pais.

Mar Azul Surf Spot – Video

    #2 – Playa Carmen

I surf mainly on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula which includes Mar Azul, Playa Carmen, St.
Teresa and Playa Hermosa. Playa Carmen, an area in Mal Pais, is a really great beach break with multiple
peaks breaking both left and right. This is one of my favorites breaks because both north and south
swells produce here. It also has several peaks which tend to spread the crowds making it a less
congested break. My favorite peak in this zone is called “El Bar” (named so because of the nightclub bar
directly in front of the break). It has a sand bottom for forgiveness and a wedgey let and right
    peak
that line up really well. This break as well as many other breaks in Mal Pais fires better at mid to
incoming high tide. It can break well on small swells and also holds a bigger swell in the over head
category. It is an easy break to access as it is located at the cross roads of Town in Mal Pais.

George Price is the owner of the beautiful Pez Volador surfer’s rental villa, a four-bedroom luxury
home with breathtaking views of the Malpais area and Mar Azul break, available for rent here: Pez
    Volador
    .

Note: When it’s low tide at Mar Azul, check out the Malpais Tidepools at Mar
    Azul.

Surfing in Malpais and Santa Teresa

Surfing in Malpais and Santa Teresa

Surfer girl in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Malpais and Santa Teresa are two beach towns on the pacific coast of Costa Rica, located just a few hours
flight from the U.S.   Costa Rica has become a world-famous destination for surfers because of its
great surf all year, its warm water, and affordable prices.   The Malpais area has dozens of great
point breaks and beach breaks that are within walking distance from the town’s many hotels, hostels,
rental villas, and bungalows.  Although still just a small town, Mal Pais has several five-star
restaurants mixed in with local Costa Rican restaurants, making it a favorite destination to everyone
from backbackers to wealthy tourists and celebrities who love surfing.

    Malpais Surfing Schools

There are several surf schools and surf camps in the Santa Teresa, Malpais, and Montezuma areas. They
range from $600-$2000 per week, depending on the accommodations and what’s included. Some of them are in
beachfront locations, with surfing right in front of the hotel. Others require a short walk, and others
include trips in a surf van to various areas around the southern Nicoya Peninsula. Surfing and Yoga is
also a very popular combination, especially for women, and the two naturally complement each other.

    Surf Hotels

For more experienced surfers, there are several beach-front hotels with surfing directly in front, and
typically these hotels will have many surfers of all ages staying in them. They will be able to
recommend to you a local surf instructor for classes, and they will rent you a board. There are many
surf shops, dozens of them in fact, where you can rent a board during your stay (typically $20/day).
Great beach-front hotels with surfing directly in front include Casa Azul on Playa Carmen, Pranamar on
Playa Hermosa, and Casa Cecilia on Santa Teresa. More many travelers, there’s no substitute for a beach
front hotel, but there are also very beautiful places that are either a short walk to the beach, or up
on a nearby hilltop with ocean views.
