Montezuma Waterfalls

Montezuma Waterfalls

There are plenty of waterfalls in Costa Rica, especially in the gulf of Nicoya Peninsula which is
cascading with waterfalls.  This is due to the fact that most of the year, rainfall flows it way to
Montezuma side swelling the waterfalls. The falls have expansive swimming creaks and rope-swings. The
waterfalls have only been recently discovered.  The rivers and falls in Costa Rica are always open
to the public and anyone can hike, swim and dive whenever they feel like. The communal area is about
fifteen meter from the border of the river. The tourists may catch sights of exquisite tropical animals
like Roseate Spoonbills, crayfish, otters and lizards. People have claimed that there are poisonous
snakes nearby the river but it is unlikely.  The morning hours are the best to watch the animals.

On the southern side of the gulf of Nicoya Peninsula, Montezuma is located. Lately, it has become a
booming hotspot for tourists. Its white-sand beaches, waterfalls and teeming jungles attract a lot of
attention.  Also, it is nearby the other famous Costa Rican landmarks such as Cabo Blanco Nature
Reserve Park, Tortuga Island and the Curu Wild Life Reserve. Montezuma Waterfalls are situated a 15
minutes walk away from the town center.

Over the height of 50 feet, Montezuma Falls are
perhaps the most famous falls of Costa Rica. It is not a single waterfall; rather it is divided into
three separate falls, stacked upon each other. To reach the first fall, begin your journey from the
ocean near the Hotel Amor de Mar. A walk up to the river of 15 minutes will take you to the peak of the
waterfall.  A large cavern of water will greet you which is perfect for swimming. Usually, a large
flock of tourists is seen here. The cliff can be climbed up to the top. However be cautious, and
carefully step on the rocks as many people die or get severely injured by slipping. Rarely, during the
heavy rainfalls, beware of the flash floods. If you hear a roaring sound, there is a chance that a flood
of water will come down from the upside of the river. Be prepared to get away to the riverbed. However,
it happens only when the rainfall is its heaviest, so do not be sacred and hike away during a light
drizzle.

For cliff diving, start climbing up to the swimming hole 1 that will eventually lead to you the swimming
holes 2 and 3 above. In order to reach the pools, you need to climb the steep path that goes right to
the pool 1, keep climbing straightly and then turn right and down. With a help of a rope, descend
downwards between the pools 2 and 3. Now, you can either jump from the cliff into the pool 2 from 40
feet distance or you can keep climbing and then jump 8 to 15 feet into the pool 3. The land by the pools
is a private property. There are homes located above in the cliffs so it would be polite to avoid
walking into their yards.

Cocos Island Accommodations

Cocos Island Accommodations

Liveaboard Ship at Cocos IslandIf you speak of accommodation, especially for those
that goes with the description of luxury and comfort, what will usually come in to your mind is a nice
view of the surroundings. In the case of an island accommodation, you can expect a nice view of the
beach and the ocean. But what if we tell you there is a kind of accommodation that offers you a great
view of both the sea and the island itself.
Here in Cocos island, it’s not just a possibility that you can have a great view of the island and the
sea at the same time, but it’s the only way. But why? Since the Costa Rican Government has prohibited
the construction of resorts, hotels or any form of human settlement in the island, tourists has no other
option but to stay and live-out at sea via live-aboard vessels.

Your Life at Sea

Most of the tour companies tendering live-aboard cruise to Cocos island offers a 10-day package. Despite
being offered as an adventure trip, do not expect that you will be living in a floating bamboo raft like
the ones you see in adventure movies. Live-aboards are custom built ship that can be classified as a
floating hotel. These vessels have several air-conditioned cabins with its own private bathroom and
enough space for comfortable living.

But don’t expect that you will spending the entire 10 days in your room as lots of activities are in
store for the trip. For example, you can do dolphin and whale watching during the 36-hour journey from
mainland Costa Rica going to Cocos
island
. Once you are safely anchored at one of the anchorage sites, you can set foot on the
island and do a day hike following an upland trail going to lush rainforest or take a dip in one of the
many waterfalls that surrounds the island. You can even hear stories about pirates and their lost looted
treasure buried somewhere in the island where you can even discuss among fellow guest about its possible
location. But please don’t plan to do treasure hunting as it is prohibited in the island.

Diving with Sharks: The Reason Why Tourists comes to Cocos island

Hammerhead SchoolIf you are not a scuba diver, then you have no good
reason in going to Cocos island. Well, non-divers can still go to Cocos island but they cannot maximize
their live-aboard trip as most of the adventure happens underwater.

Compared to other dive destination, Cocos island only has a few dive sites. Just over ten sites. But
nevertheless, all these sites guarantee to fill your adrenaline bucket. Coming face to face with sharks
is a guaranteed experience in each dive. Dominated by hammerhead sharks, you will see hundreds of these
apex predators when you go diving in Cocos island. Their immense population coupled with the way they
swim and pass by you will give you the impression that they form a barricade commonly known as the “wall
of sharks”.
If there is a wall, then there is also a “carpet of sharks” in Cocos Island, but this is not made up of
hammerhead sharks. Instead, it is made up of sleeping whitetip reef sharks where they cover the northern
reefs of Cocos island called Manuelita. The description of this relatively relaxed dive is only
applicable when you do a day where the situation is totally different during night time. Aside from
total darkness, whitetip reef sharks are now highly active in search for food. Just imagine, regardless
of where you point the beam of your underwater torch or flashlight, sharks are always there as they are
attracted to its brightness.

If you consider your interaction with hammerheads and whitetip reef sharks as fair excitement, then wait
until a large-sized shark with that famous stripe will give you the ultimate surprise of your life. Yes,
tiger sharks have been seen and recorded passing by near the reef ledge and may come close to your group
for a close inspection. Don’t worry, it will just go away and get back to its patrolling course after a
few minutes.

Whalesharks do appear in Cocos island where they have become a part of your underwater adventures in
Cocos island. Most dive groups interact with whalesharks towards the end of the dive where you will
usually exit on deep water. Many have considered this interaction the icing on the cake.

Well, after all these descriptions, you can say that the underwater world of Cocos island is the perfect
accommodation for sharks.

Deep-Sea Diving for Divers and Non-Divers

This is good news in case you or your partner is not a certified diver. While recreational diving
requires training and certification, deep-sea diving requires none. But how is this possible since you
will go deep-sea diving?

A deep-sea submersible craft is the answer to this. Doing this only requires a short orientation. After
your pre-dive preparation, all you need to do is sit down inside the submersible craft and let the pilot
do the maneuvering and diving.

If divers are amazed by the transition of the shallow depths to the abyssal darkness, then what more for
non-divers. As you enter the twilight zone, what you will see are only the lights of the submersibles
instruments. But as the external strobes of the craft are lit-up, deep-sea creatures that are usually
oddly looking will start to come near you as they are attracted to the artificial light. Diving further
down up to 300 meters (1,000 feet), you will see a different environment from above where the dynamics
of the abyssal depths is usually calm and tranquil. This is perfectly manifested by the slow movement of
its wildlife like the jellynose fish, red-lipped batfish and the prickly shark.

At the end of the day when you go back home, you will realize that living on board for 10 days is
actually not a bad deal as your only option in going to Cocos island. And maybe, correct us if we are
wrong, you are already planning for your next trip in this beautiful offshore Costa Rican Island.

Curu National Wildlife Refuge

Curu National Wildlife Refuge

Curú National Wildlife Refuge is situated on the southern Pacific Coast of Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica.
The refuge park is famous for its flourishing and diverse flora and fauna, and also includes a cluster
of splendid white-sand beaches. Near the town of Curu, west from the road of Paquera, the land, which is
now the national reserve park, was a coastal village teeming with wildlife. In 1930s, it was bought from
the Pacific Lumber Company. Between 1981 and 1983, the town of rich tropical jungles packed with cattle
and grazers turned into a national wildlife refuge. It sprawls over the grounds larger than 208 acres,
and carry a plethora of animals, more than 232 different species of birds and multifarious kinds of
plants. The Curu River flows though the park and a system of Mangroves line its borders. The marshy
river transforms into a amalgamation of sultry dry and wet jungles, a common feature on the southern
inland of Nicoya Peninsula.

The road that follows to Curu National Wildlife Refuge is full of dirt and roughness, which makes it
unsuitable for two-wheels. Hence a four-wheel vehicle is convenient for a drive. For rests and
accommodations, families can rent one of the cabins along the beach for 6 dollars a bed per night.
Food and horse rentals are also available in a good price. This allows the visitors to tour more
comfortably around the park and provides them with enough time. Alternatively, there are plenty of
hotels and inns in the town that bode well for tourists. Some of these hotels also organize a guided
trip to the park. Additionally, there are bucolic lodges in the Curu Park that can be rented for time
being.

On the park’s white-sand beaches, Leatherback Turtles sand Olive Ridley turtles, that now have
gone sparse, can be found during the nesting season to lay eggs. By Curu Bay, Turismo Curu is
present from where visitors can request for a horseback ride, hiking tours and other guided
trips.  There are boats available that can take you to traverse the water and awesome trips
to Tortuga Island, which is 3 miles away from the bay, and other beaches on the park. In Curu
Park, visitors will be amazed by the underwater nature. Tortuga Island is known to have some of
the best snorkeling and scuba diving sites of the Costa Rican Pacific Coast. Gear up and dive in
to view the schools of King Angel Fish, Damsel Fish, Cortez Angel Fish and numerous others. Do
not forget to bring your swimsuits, the Curu Park offers amazing aquatic condition for swimming.

Curu National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best
places to watch the birds and animals in Costa Rica. Tourists can easily sight capuchin monkeys,
spider monkeys, howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, white-tailed deer, crabs, river otters,
coatis, red squirrels, raccoons, coyotes, iguanas, scarlet macaws, collard peccary and more than
232 species of birds.  Curu National Wildlife Refuge is now one of the most successful
examples of protected ecosystem. The park is a must visit on your holiday to Costa Rica.

Tortuga Island

Tortuga Island

Tortuga Island is a haven of beauty and serenity lying off the Southern-west peak of the Gulf of Nicoya
Peninsula. The peninsula is known as abode of natural tranquility and buzz in the shape of fabulous
beaches by the Pacific Ocean and tropical rain-forests. Towns like Mal Pais, Montezuma and Santa Teresa
have recently become holiday hotspot. Surfers, sports-enthusiasts, naturists, families and couples all
retreat to Costa Rica for a memorable and adventurous time. Tortuga Island is an enticing hideaway with
a promise of surroundings of luscious nature and amazing sports opportunities. The island is covered by
a sheet of silver sand punctuated with dancing coconut trees and palm trees and rimmed by an endless
azure lagoon. Either have a sporty day out there or simply succumb into the relaxing zone.

There are numerous agencies and accommodations’ concierges that arrange tours to Tortuga Island by a boat
trip. The boat commonly travels from Jaco and Puntarenas and is an exhilarating and beauteous 90 minutes
ride. In the beginning, the boat cruises along the bay and give tourists a chance to view a delightful
scene of roughened volcanic rocks, red-colored rocks, fawn crystals of sand, oysters, and colorful
pieces of crushed shells lining the borders of the shore. Once you have reached the island, you will be
greeted by a curtain of tropical beauty at its best. The long sunny days are perfect for all sorts of
activities; swimming, snorkeling, water biking, kayaking, getting on a glass bottom
boat,  hiking the trails on the mounts, exploring the forests, playing a fun game of
volleyball, going on a canopy tour, zipping through the tree tops, watching the birds and having a
leisurely picnic. Scuba diving and snorkeling are the main activities that lure the travelers to the
island. The exclusive spots are pierced by the right amount of the sun-rays and are protected by a
barrier of volcanic rocks and reef. One can admire the mystical marine life up close. Watch the
sting-rays, manta-rays, reef sharks, octopuses, spotted eagle rays, playful spinner dolphins, morays,
needle fishes and angel fishes go about their own business. The clear and warm waters around Tortuga
Island are blessed with a diverse range of species. If the trip is on your luckiest day, you might see a
humpback whale seafaring around the waters. For hikers, follow the trail up to the top of the hill and
from there, take in the abstracts of the ocean far below.

After hours of adventures and animated fun, take out
your baskets of appetizing food and eat under the sunny clime and the warm breeze of ocean. Often, the
tour organizers prepare a picnic for everyone. If you are on a romantic retreat, take a stroll by the
sugary-white coast of the isle and renew the romance. Enjoy the picturesque views infinite waters, and
the spectacles of dazzling sunsets. As the sun goes down, a serene boar ride will take you back to the
beach of Montezuma.
